MISSION AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH

So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead (James 2:17)

We seek to be always active in mission to help the needy -- locally, nationwide, worldwide.
Some of the ESUMC organized activities are listed here, but individual church members also support many other charitable activities.

Souper Locally, we are active members of GRIP, the Greater Richmond Interfaith Program. Once each month we take our turn to provide, prepare and serve food to the hungry at the Souper Center.

We also take part in the annual Hunger Walk.

Donations of food are continually collected for the local Share/Manna project to feed needy families.

From time to time we join in VIM (Volunteers in Mission) activities, usually construction or construction/medical projects. Some are assisting nearby churches or youth homes (e.g Fred Finch in Oakland). Sometimes further afield (e.g. Lithuania, Guatemala, Spain).

PET

We support the PET project, which provides volunteer-built, self-propelled transport for people in other countries who have lost the use of their legs (often because of land mines or polio).

We have a covenant relationship with Carol Partridge, now a United Methodist missionary in Strumica, Macedonia; and at one time a member here.

We receive special offerings to help alleviate suffering. Some these are in materials -- garden seeds, backpacks and school supplies, Chrismas gifts for children at Fred Finch and the County Juvenile Hall. Others are monetary, for various national and international disasters, and also include the six "Special Sundays" recommended in the United Methodist Church. These are
  • Human Relations Day
  • One Great Hour of Sharing
  • Native American Ministries
  • Peace with Justice
  • World Communion Sunday
  • United Methodist Student Day
We also have some funds available for local emergency needs.

Always, we try to be alert for new opportunites to help.
